I've had it up to HERE with any book marketed as "a totally blah-blah blank thriller full of blank". Because you know what? That's MARKETING for you. Fill in the blanks. Shailini Boland had some good ideas. You know. Once upon a time. Now I have to assume she buys her plots wholesale from "Plots 'R Us (Not a Gravesite Retailer)" or "Acme Thrills 'N Chills: When U Need An Idea, We're Here For U". Pity these don't come with characters included."My Little Girl: A totally gripping psychological thriller full of shocking twists" is a dismal yawn concerning child kidnapping. I would love to make this sound more horrifying, but in accordance with the concern level shown by the child's family, this has all the trauma of a really bad nosebleed, or maybe the pilfering of your latest Amazon package off your front porch. I may as well also confess that I figured out the ENTIRE plot in Chapter Four (I say this modestly, but I expect that most people could. I admit that I read tons of thrillers. Some of them are even good. To figure this one out, you basically have to have read about three other thrillers in your life, and voila!--you will have a fairly good idea of what's going on).Our novel opens with vapid Jill, a grandmother who is apparently "watching" her granddaughter Beatrice, and Beatrice's friend, at a funfair. She is ruminating on the fact her daughter-in-law, Claire, doesn't trust her to watch Beatrice. We soon find out why, since Jill answers the phone while in the hall of mirrors (to speak to her ex-daughter-in-law), losing track of the two young girls. She realizes she has lost them, finds Beatrice's friend, and eventually chaos ensues when it becomes clear that Beatrice is missing. Oliver, Beatrice's father, was supposed to be with the girls at the fair, but allowed his absent-minded mother to watch two seven-year-olds instead of being there, instead. Claire, Beatrice's mother, who was on her way out for the evening, rushes to the fair, only to find out that Jill was with the girls (and lost her daughter), instead of Oliver.Whew! What a mix-up! Jill decides that she'd better not tell anyone that she was on the phone during those rather important minutes when she lost Beatrice. Claire and Oliver don't tell the police about Jill's absent-mindedness. The police don't seem to interview anyone of importance. No one seems to act like a human being.I don't know where authors learn about human beings these days, but I always assumed they watched real live people and observed human behavior. I'll reevaluate, because the people in this novel behave in spectacularly odd ways. Their kid is missing, but this seems to be a fairly minor inconvenience. No one seems to be in shock; no one is stunned; no one cries in mad heartbreak. As a matter of fact, everyone brightly assumes that it will all get better! What planet do these people live on? No one looks at the internet either, because apparently they don't know any of the statistics about abduction. In one scene, Claire finds out a critical piece of information and NEEDS to tell the police immediately. Instead of CALLING THE POLICE, she decides to...drive to the police station. When one of her friends offers to drive her instead, she not only agrees, but she allows the friend to...make a detour??? I mean, what gives? When your daughter is missing, does every minute, ever second, COUNT? Is Claire desperate? The actions are so unbelievable as to seem callously indifferent, or unintentionally hilarious, depending on how you see it.*Minor Spoilers*Not only are these characters odd and clunky, but in the end, the women in the novel all conform to pretty terrible tropes. I'm fairly tired of reading novels and thrillers where the end hinges on tired stereotypes of women/women in certain situations acting out in been there/done that ways. Could we just get rid of all of this S%&*? Writers really need to come up with some new ideas. There's nothing inventive or extraordinary about conforming to demeaning or belittling stereotypes of ANY PERSON.Flat, dull characters are terrible. No one wants to read about them; no one cares. If you want to read a simplistic, mindless book, read another, different book. There are so many. Just skip this one. I've read just about all of this author's books and this one certainly didn't disappoint! The common thread here seems to be that her plot twists and endings are always a surprise. This one just kept me guessing, and I never saw it coming. Ms. Boland has a gift. She artfully weaves red herrings as well as legitimate clues into her tales which makes for a great deal of wondering who has done what, and how and why? I consider it highly entertaining! This book gave insight into two of the main characters and kept the pages turning as fast as I could read!
